About Time to Learn Piano

Catherine, who has taught piano for over 20 years, has a degree in music from Cambridge University, where she was Music Sizar at Churchill College,  as well as a number of teaching qualifications. At Cambridge, she sang in Chapel Choir, had a solo in a contemporary opera, and regularly sang in recitals and concerts. When she lived in London she sang in a number of chamber choirs, and for a number of years, before having her own family, was a member of the Cathedral Chamber Choir.

She is a Registered Teacher with Incorporated Society of Musicians, which means that she is vetted and references taken up on a regular basis.

She is a strong believer in continuing learning,  and takes up CPD to keep up to date with, for example,  teaching methods, playing the piano and singing. In 2012 she took the on line 4 month course with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music: Being an Effective Teacher, and attends ABRSM and other conferences. Currently she is studying for a Masters in Fine Art, her other passion, at University of Gloucestershire, which takes up most of her spare time! She spends a good deal of non contact time planning and researching suitable music, examinations and activities for her students, as she considers each is unique and their learning styles and interests must be paramount when learning to play an instrument.

Catherine has taught  music to all ages of people, from just a few months old (and their carers!) to those well into retirement. She specialises in piano and keyboard, developing musicianship through learning and fun. Lessons are geared towards the students' interests and needs, so every student will be learning in a way designed specifically for him or her. Singing is an integral part of her lessons, and a number of her students are now studying singing as well as piano.

Catherine, who has a special interest in Early Music, (she also studied harpsichord for a number of years)  also teaches recorder, as well as composition, theory, and music history. She can assist with GCSE, A level and university entrance as well as take you through graded practical and theory examinations with a variety of exam boards, depending on what is most suitable for you.

As she says "whether you're 7 or 70, it's always a good time to learn piano."

In fact, using a method developed by a colleague and friend from Cambridge University, children as young as 3 or 4 can now start learning the piano! Based on methodology developed by Zoltan Kodaly, a Hungarian composer, musician and educationalist, whose skills and ideas have been recognised world wide, young children who can concentrate for 10-15 minutes may be ready to start learning! For the first year, a keyboard with 3-4 octaves is sufficient to practise on, but success relies on parental support and encouragement as well as regular lessons.
